Mayhem!

Tomorrow, June 2, the Children’s summer reading program unleashes it’s craziness on the library!  This means if you have signed up to volunteer (or if you’ve been thinking about it) tomorrow is your chance to show your stuff!

So far our volunteers have logged over 30 hours of helpfulness.   They’ve decorated, created crafts, built a house out of cereal boxes, and assorted other projects.

We’ll need a great showing from our teen volunteers to make the day a success!  See you all at the library around 9:30 am – and wear your running shoes!

The Big Burger vs. Comic Books

Well, the big burger won.  El Reno’s 21st Annual Friend Onion Burger Day will be held tomorrow, May 2 in Downtown El Reno!  What does this have to do with comic books?  Well, the library will be CLOSED on Burger Day – which means you will all miss out on Free Comic Book Day here at the library!

Dear Readers, we know your hearts are broken – but hear this!  We’ll give out free comic books all next week (or until our stash is gone) to make up for it.  So drop by next week, May 4-8 and pick up a free comic book!

Free book!

Apparently for a limited time only, you can visit the Amazon page for The Alchemyst by Michael Scott and download a free PDF version of the book!

Here’s the link. You’ll want to look below the area that shows the different editions that are available (Kindle, hardback, paperback, etc.)

Question of the day – would you read an entire book while sitting at your computer?  Have you?

Volunteer @ your library!

We’re soliciting for teen volunteers!  We need teens entering 6-12th grades to come help our during our children’s summer reading program in June.  And we need some help getting ready for it all in April and May!

We’re going to have our FIRST EVER teen volunteer meeting.  Most important thing to know?  We’re having free pizza.  We treat our volunteers right!  :)  Other details:

Teen Volunteer Meeting – Thursday, April 16, 2009
4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
@ the El Reno Carnegie Library, 215 E. Wade

Bring a friend!

You can find out more about volunteering in general any time.  Just ask Penny or Kate.  Even if you can’t come to the meeting April 16, you can still sign up to help out at the library!  Drop by sometime and fill out a volunteer application.

20 boxes of books

The Oklahoma Department of Libraries donated 20 boxes of books to our library.  That’s a lot of books!

What does this mean for you?  It means we have a TON of new books in the teen area!  I mean there’s barely room on the shelves for all of the new books we got!

Also, we added some non-fiction that will be great when report time rolls around this spring.  Wanna write about ebola or another deadly virus?  We’ve got it!  (The info you need – not ebola.)

Come check it out!

The Curious Case of Copyright

What if living longer meant growing younger?

In the teen section, we’ve got a poster up for the upcoming movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.  It stars Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt.  Did you know the film is based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald?

And, did you know that when written works are a certain age (in this case, because this story was published before 1923) the work enters the public domain (Copyright is pretty complicated, but
www.copyright.gov tries to explain it in English.)  Long story short – this text can be made available in its entirety – and it’s totally legal!

So, while our library doesn’t happen to have a copy of a book with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button available, we can point you to a full-text copy available online.
Read it here!
