Summer reading took over our lives! (or why there have been no posts.)

The teen summer reading program wrapped up nicely in July.  August has been a bit of a break, and now we’re back in the swing of things!

Yesterday:  Teen Advisory Board met.  Decided we’ve GOTto have a Twilight Prom in Oct.  Also, we’ve got to decide:  are we going to keep having EHS lunch at the library one day a week?  Could we do it on Wednesday?  Thoughts, EHS students?

Today:  New books are flying off of the shelves in the teen area.  Here are a few of the new titles:

The Magician by Michael Scott
How to be Bad by Lauren Myracle, E. Lockhart, and Sarah Mlynowski
BREAKING DAWN by Stephenie Meyer
Christy Miller volumes 1-6 by Robin Jones Gunn
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney

And many, many more!

Tomorrow (and beyond!):  Next TAB meeting – Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 4-5 pm.  We’re looking for new members, so show up and bring a friend!

Summer Reading Sign up!

Teen Summer Reading sign up started yesterday, July 1.  There were literally people waiting at the door at 9 am to sign up!  That’s how stupendously cool the backpack/bags are that you get when you join the summer reading team.  Anyone in grades 6-12 gets one until they are gone!!  So get in here, fill in a tiny little sheet of paper, and pick up your summer reading packet!

Poetry for BCWWDRB

Poetry is sometimes collected in books, but it doesn’t have to be.  So, that’s why it’s qualified to be a part of the Book Club Where We Don’t Read Books.

txtmsg poetry ne1?

We’ll read (and write) some haikus, explore rhyming dictionaries, and check out some books(but not read them – this is the BCWWDRB…) that are written entirely in poems.

We’re meeting:

This Thursday, June 19 @ the library
3-4 pm
All people entering grades 6-12
We have snacks!  :)

Manga stuff for the BCWWDRB

Manga madness @ your library!

*edit*  Here’s some background for what we’ll be talking about at our next Book Club Where We Don’t Read Books!  Meeting:  @ the library from 3-4 pm, June 12.  *end edit*

Check out this article from Wired magazine - the info is interesting but the ability to “turn the pages” is particularly fun!  Also, check out ”Manga 101” from Wired.

Need a refresher on your manga terminology?

Did you know that there are manga test prep books?  It’s a whole new way to study for the ACT!  Scroll down a bit to check it out.

You can read bits from Shojo Beat and Shonen Jump magazines online.  Our library subscribes to Shonen Jump – if you wish we had Shojo Beat, leave a comment and tell us so!

Are you a manga/anime fanatic?  Bring your drawings or your favorite manga to share at the June 12 meeting.

Comics packet for the BCWWDRB!

The Book Club Where We Don’t Read Books presents:  Comics!
Thursday, June 5 from 3-4 @ the library.  We’ll look at comic books, comic strips, web comics, graphic novels (don’t worry – this is the BCWWDRB so we won’t be reading a whole graphic novel.)

We’ll bust out the paper and pencils and draw our own comic strips too!  Comic collector?  Bring one or two to show off to the group!

Check out some of these links before you come to book club – or pick up a smaller print packet at the library.

Webcomics – a Wikipedia Definition:

“Webcomics, online comics, or internet comics are comics published on a website, often exclusively, providing easy access to an audience, though some are published in books and newspapers but maintain a web archive.

Webcomics are like self-published print comics in that almost anyone can author their own webcomic and publish it. Over 18,000 webcomics now exist online,[1][2] from traditional cartoon strips to graphic novels, covering many genres and subjects.[2]

*edit!*  Here are some more comics featuring reviews by Michael, a guy who reads dozens of webcomics!  Thanks M!

Thinkin’ Lincoln is a comic containing the heads of Lincoln, Washington, Elizabeth II, Young Martha Washington and countless other historical figures. None of them actually bear any resemblance to themselves in personality at all.

Evil Inc. is a corporation that makes gadgets and provides insurance for supervillains. The company practically goes bankrupt through a series of complications, such as hiring the city’s greatest super-hero as CEO.
